Getting started is the hardest part
Who knew a DJI Mini 2 would be so much fun? This is the first video I ever made, from my first flights!
Welcome to my very first blog post! I purchased the DJI Mini 2 on a whim. I don't know anything about aviation or video games and I feel a little bit like a fish out of water, but the drone is surprisingly easy to use and a lot of fun.
Hovering
“The secret to getting ahead is getting started” – Mark Twain
I knew nothing about drones before purchasing the DJI Mini 2. That said, it is the EASIEST drone to use! The big deal is "hovering." Once you turn it on, it hovers in place until you move the controls. Without the hovering feature, the drone would crash to the ground immediately if you weren't actively flying. It's literally open the box, watch the tutorial, and you're off! #djimini2. #hovering #drones #videogallery
Editing
The worst part about flying drones is "What to do with all the footage?" Staying organized is my biggest challenge. If anyone has any tips, I am all ears! I've been tackling the problem by buying new SD Cards. I'm worried about depleting the storage on my laptop so I only transfer footage I use for editing a video. Some folks suggest shooting in 2K versus 4K (smaller file sizes).
Day 1
"The most important possible thing you can do is a lot of work." – Ira Glass
I really love Ira Glass and This American Life. I feel embarrassed to put myself out there, particularly as I am a perfectionist and I know at this time, my work just isn't very good. Ira was interviewed about this particular phenomenon and this is what he had to say:
Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, and I really wish somebody had told this to me.
All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it's like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you're making stuff, what you're making isn't so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good.
But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you're making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.
Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn't as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that.
And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you're going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you're going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you're making will be as good as your ambitions.
I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It takes awhile. It’s gonna take you a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.
I hope if you've read this far, you are inspired too! Let the transformation begin. Thank you, Ira Glass.
